Guide to the Coastal Marine Fishes of Californa #4065
Published in Paperback by UC Regents (June, 1976)
Authors: Daniel J. Miller and Robert N. Lea
Average review score:

Comprehensive, Accurate, Helpful
An essential guidebook for California marine studies, covering immediate coastal-littoral to coastal deep-water Isaac's Kid level fishes. While working on a research ship in SoCal we constantly referred to this text- it's inexpensive, so there is little concern from salt-water damage; yet it is also highly accurate and systematic in it's coverage of marine fishes. Though the lack of color can hinder identification on occasion, the key identification features make up for any confusion. The text follows a scientific dichotomous key which allows for identification and comparison of closely-related fishes- helpful when trying to identify just what species you might be holding at the moment- and if it might be poisoness or not. Extremely useful for those of a scientific bent, with it's use of teminology and scientific nomenclature, it is also usable by the layman because of th eintricate drawings and clear, concise information.

Excellent Guide!
My fiancée and I bought this book before we moved to New Mexico in March of 2000. It has proven to be a fantastic guide and we believe that it's the only book you need to explore the state on foot. Well organized by area with great trail descriptions and maps. A wonderful book!

Hair of the Dog: Tales from Aboard a Russian Trawler
Published in Hardcover by Washington State Univ Pr (August, 1996)
Author: Barbara A. Oakley
Average review score:

From a Former Interpreter Aboard Russian Trawlers
This is a special book and a very enjoyable read. Oakley perservered in getting it published and we are all the beneficiaries. Give yourself a treat and get a glimpse of US-Soviet relations that few Americans have witnessed. This book is not just a factual account of life at sea; it is a view into the Russian soul and psyche. You will not regret it.

Just outstanding. Gritty.
One of those books that just puts you in the time and place. A great perspective on labor in an important region of the country. A must for those interested in American expansion and our history.

Hawaii by Bike: 20 Tours Geared for Discovery (By Bike)
Published in Paperback by Mountaineers Books (April, 1995)
Author: Nadine Slavinski
Average review score:

A good book (for me)
Slavinski's books describe bicycle touring in a way that most closely approximates my own rhythm and pace of cycling. The experienced cycle tourist will know what I mean. I recommend newcomers who want a book to try one of Slavinski's, as well as books by other cyclists. Perhaps you'll discover a writer who "speaks" to you. If not, then you may end up writing your own. Or you may become a truly independent rider--no books, *no* maps. Try it!

Hawaii's Best Beaches
Published in Paperback by University of Hawaii Press (February, 1999)
Author: John R. K. Clark
Average review score:

Hawaii's best beaches is very informative.
I've read John Clark's other books, and this one tops them all. It combines the information from all of Hawaii's best beaches in a creative and informative way. I am new to the Hawaii islands, so I also enjoy reading part of the history of the beaches as well as the meaning of the Hawaiian beach names. This book is also complete with beautiful color photos. I would recommend this book to anyone visiting Hawaii. Beaches are Hawaii's greatest asset.

Hawaii: True Stories of the Island Spirit (Travelers' Tales Guides)
Published in Paperback by Travelers' Tales Inc (July, 1999)
Authors: Rick Carroll and Marcie Carroll
Average review score:

Anyone who loves the Hawaiian islands will love this book.
This is more of a suggestion for reading rather than a review: read the book from beginning to end because the editors have done a splendid job of organizing the essays to present a coherent and colorful view of Hawaii. I don't know of a better contemporary look into what has attracted tourists to the islands since the first Polynesians arrived. While not exactly a travel guide, it is a map for how one might travel. As a cultural anthropologist, I enjoyed hearing the many voices telling the stories of this Pacific crossroads. The book belongs to the best tradition of the Hawaiian impulse to talk story.
